The Emirates Health Services (EHS) revealed that Al Qassimi Women's & Children's Hospital, since the Covid-19 outbreak, has successfully performed more than 415 pediatric surgeries, most of which for newborns with congenital anomalies, with a success rate of up to 100%, using the latest medical equipment and under the supervision of a distinguished medical staff.

This achievement comes as part of the EHS's plans and efforts to provide integrated health care according to the best standards of excellence and professionalism. This also stems from the EHS's keenness to provide its hospitals and health facilities with the latest diagnostic devices and high-tech equipment according to the highest international quality standards.

The medical cadres are also constantly trained to enhance their capacities to perform rare surgeries that require high expertise, know-how and efficiency.

Such procedures contribute to enhancing local and international confidence in the efficiency of health services and consolidating the status and gains of the health sector in the country.

Turning challenges into success

This achievement cements the institution’s efficiency in applying the standards of the continuation of services and business and achieving the goals of national resilience in adapting to challenges and turning them into success, said HE Youssef Mohammed Al Serkal, Director-General, EHS.

Al Serkal highlighted the EHS's commitment to providing hospitals with state-of-the-art technologies, leading to the development of health and treatment services, especially pediatric surgeries. This has also contributed to the hospital’s success in performing critical surgeries efficiently and professionally, resulting in the recovery of children and pleasing their families.

He noted that qualitative development in surgical operations comes in line with the EHS's plans and programs to provide the best diagnostic and treatment services and carry out the standards of quality and excellence in hospitals.

Al Serkal affirmed the EHS's commitment to enhancing the confidence of patients in the efficiency of health services, which represent positive indicators of entering the recovery phase, in light of the achievements made by the country in containing the pandemic, according to global reports and indices.

Using latest treatment methods

Dr. Kulthum Al Balushi, Director of Hospitals Department, commended the stellar performance of the medical team and its success in performing pediatric general surgeries, something that confirms the efficiency of doctors and consultants in dealing with complex cases.

"The EHS is committed to promoting innovation and excellence, embracing the latest methods of treatments in order to alleviate patient suffering and change their life for the better, thanks to the abundance of the best potential and resources while continuing to improve the quality of health services in accordance with international standards," she underlined.

Using best-advanced technology

Using endoscopes in about 50% of pediatric surgeries has led to the reduction of the number of hours dedicated to surgeries, noted Dr. Safiya Alkhajeh, Director of Al Qassimi Hospital for Women & Children, while the sophisticated equipment has greatly contributed to preparing an ideal work environment for pediatric consultants and surgeons.

Also, using endoscopes contributes to reducing the hospital length of stay by 50%, in addition to achieving a high success rate with 30% fewer side effects, especially in newborns whose cases require rapid surgical intervention, Al Khaja added.

She hailed the efforts being made by the medical staff from the surgeons, who in turn were able to transfer their expertise to the new doctors on the optimal use of surgical endoscopes, making the hospital one of the most prominent reference hospitals that provide medical care in the pediatric surgery field.

She also thanked the hospital's engineering team for carrying out the requirements of surgeons by furnishing a digital operating room dedicated to pediatric surgery.

Adopting latest treatment technologies

Dr. Khaled Khalfan Sabt, Deputy Director for Technical Affairs at Al Qassimi Hospital for Women & Children, said: "The operating room is equipped with the latest medical technology which contributed to reducing time intervals between surgeries and controlling movement inside the room,"

He noted that the room is also equipped with a unidirectional airflow system, which limits the entry of bacteria and viruses."

All such measures contribute to accelerating patients' recovery time, reducing their length of stay in the hospital, and restarting their normal life, besides protecting the medical and nursing staff from infection, he said in conclusion.
