Emirates Health Services (EHS) revealed that it has increased capacity in the Accident and Emergency Department of Fujairah Hospital as part of its development strategy to support health facilities and enable them to provide top-quality diagnostic and treatment services to patients across various regions.

EHS implemented the project according to a specific schedule and in line with international standards, in an effort to improve the medical sector and the quality of services provided, strengthening the Hospital’s role in treating emergency cases and accidents from the eastern coast and its surrounding areas. Following expansion works on the Accident and Emergency Department at Fujairah Hospital, which were completed in April 2021, the Department serviced more than 22,000 patients, processing 100% of all emergency cases received that require immediate attention the first quarter of this year 2022.

Ahmed Al-Khadim, Director of Fujairah Hospital, confirmed that the project to develop the Accident and Emergency Department sought to expand the Department and raise its operational capacity to accommodate larger numbers of patients, reduce waiting times, and provide healthcare in a manner that reflects EHS’ standards and aspirations. This, in turn, helps achieve EHS’ objectives to provide high-quality services for all members of the community, all the while maintaining excellence, efficiency, and preparedness.

Al-Khadim indicated that the Department includes a patient recovery room with a capacity of four beds, a case evaluation area with a capacity of two beds, an additional room with a capacity of three beds, a patient observation area with a capacity of 15 beds, and other rooms dedicated for providing various services, such as isolation and radiology (General X-Ray/CT Scan).

For her part, Dr Amal Al Jasmi, Assistant Director for Medical Affairs at Fujairah Hospital, explained that in 2020, the Department was able to process more than 27,000 cases, compared to 42,000 in 2019. The number of patients treated in the Accident and Emergency Department after the completion of its expansion in April 2021 exceeded 22,000. This means that the Department processed 100% of emergency cases that require immediate attention in the first quarter of 2022, while the response rate for non-emergency cases that can wait from two to four hours was at 97%,” Dr Al Jasmi noted.

“The new expansion contributed to upgrading the services provided and their quality, in addition to enhancing the Department’s role in providing diagnostic and treatment services for emergency cases that require rapid intervention,” she continued. “The development operations went in parallel with the opening of a dedicated pathway for the Accident and Emergency Department in the hospital, as well as the Emergency Department for Obstetrics & Gynaecology, in line with international standards and in coordination with local government departments.”

The expansion and development of emergency departments across various hospitals under the EHS umbrella are part of a strategic plan to develop health facilities on a regular basis, raising their efficiency and readiness to remain on top of the rapid developments and events transforming the health sector in the region and around the world.
