What is Measles?

  • Measles is highly contagious viral disease caused by the measles virus.

Transmission of Measles

  • Measles spreads by direct contact with nasal or throat secretions of infected individuals.
  • It can also be transmitted through the respiratory tract of an infected by droplets spread into the air during coughing or sneezing.

Symptoms of Measles

  • High fever (40°C)
  • Redness and watery eye discharge
  • Skin rash
  • Headache
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Enlarged lymph nodes

It is advisable to seek medical help immediately if you experience any signs or symptoms


High risk groups

  • Immunocompromised individuals
  • Unvaccinated children
  • Unvaccinated pregnant women
  • Unvaccinated adults

Complications of Measles

  • Severe diarrhea
  • Lung infection
  • Blindness
  • Brain infection

Treatment of Measles

There is no specific anti-viral treatment for measles virus. The virus and symptoms typically disappear in about 2 or 3 weeks.

Symptoms and the chance of complications can be reduced by following the doctor's instruction such as:

  • Antipyretic and non- steroidal anti- inflammatory to reduce fever
  • Vitamin A supplements
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Resting to boost the immunity
  • Using humidifier to ease a cough and sore throat

Prevention of Measles

  • The only way to prevent measles is to get the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine starting from the age of 12 months.
  • Your child needs two doses of MMR vaccine for the best protection against Measles.
  • One MMR vaccine provides around 93% protection against measles whereas a second booster helps to improve the effectiveness of the measles vaccine to more than 97%
  • A protective dose of the measles vaccine can be given to children and adults in the in case of an outbreak
